Sanity lost

A quest in Shroud of the Avatar, given by Tanya Cumpston at Ardoris. This quest gives you 3500 / parent experience & 500 gold as a reward and has 22 comments.

Tanya Cumpston, a young mother that I met at the Ardoris market has asked that I try to find out who killed her son.

Woman named Tanya Cumpston said she had some “work” for me.

“Tanya’s son was killed on the steps next to the marketplace, but she did not see how it happened. However, one of the merchants, a farmer named Samuel, saw what happened.”

I was taking care of some love twists, so I headed to the docks first. I purchased a map of Vertas Pass from Simone von Erlinger, and she said in tears that her daughter was slain by an “arrow”, and that there was two more.

“Each child was killed by a black arrow. Captain Cugel said they looked like they were charred by fire.”

I went to marketplace looking at the roofs for any signs of attacks. I found Samuel easily, he was the only one with fresh vegetables. I told him “Tanya” had asked me to find her “son’s” killer. Then he told me about the “black arrow”.

“Samuel the farmer saw the black arrow in flight before it killed Tanya’s son. He said it was moving very fast. More importantly, he said that it looked like it came from the tower that overlooks the market. I should visit the tower that overlooks the market and see if I can see both the docks and the market from there.”

I asked about a “tower”.

“The tower that overlooks the market is only supposed to be used by the guards. Could the black arrow archer be a guard?”

Hmpf… Supposed only be used by the guards. Door is open so everyone could climb to the top. But I noticed a crumbled, stained piece of a note on the floor.

“…am saddened to inform you of the untimely death of your son. The death has been found to be accidental…

…further details will be proveded upon your timely return.

My condolences for your loss.
Captain Cugel”

I didn’t take the note, but climbed to the top and saw marketplace and the docks clearly. I came down and stopped a guard, that was near the tower. He was named Rolf and I asked what he knew of the “black arrow”.

“Rolf is an archer in The Black Turtle Guard. He said they char their weapons over a hot flame and not only does the soot turns them black, but it makes them stronger. He also said an arrow charred in this way would fly straighter over a longer distance and could even pierce a body straight through.”

I asked him a lot and he answered and I had this gut feeling that there is something wrong in this guard. I “accused” him of the murders and he laughed at me saying I needed proof to back that up.

I went to see Captain Cugel and he told me Rolf’s son was drowned while he was in Solace Bridge. Chill went down my spine and I ran to the tower and took the note. I tried to find Rolf but he was nowhere to be seen. Was he placing an arrow at the same moment to shoot another kid? I ran back to Cugel and I almost bumped to Rolf on the corner.

I “accused” him again waving a note in front of his face.

“Guard Rolf confessed to killing the children when confronted. However, he became hysterical and may even be more dangerous now. I should tell Captain Cugel about this right away!”

I told Cugel simply that “Rolf was guilty” murdering those kids.

“I informed Captain Cugel of everything I discovered during my investigation of the Black Arrow Archer and gave him Guard Rolf’s confession to bein the killer. I should visit Tanya Cumpston and tell her what I found.”

Captain Cugel gave me notes to parents. First I went to Simone von Englinger, then to Tanya Cumpston.

“I informed Simone von Englinger that we had tracked down the killer of her daughtter. I do not know if this helped bring her any peace…”

  1. This quest brings twice as much experience, if you do tell both mothers in the end.

  15. Damn. It has been a while since I did this so I can’t remember exactly. But I do remember that it was pain in the arse to get Cugel and Rolf to understand things.

  16. Rolf only seem to respond if you actually type in the word “accuse”. If you’re trying to bring up the subject in any other way (like talk about the note you found or use the word “murder”), it won’t work. The designers only thought of a single word to progress and assumed you’d fully understand that a structure being dwarfed by every surrounding buildings would be a “tower”.

Speaking of not working, Rolf doesn’t seem to think that the note you found is proof even if you do “accuse” him. Clearly a bug. So if it’s not working, don’t fret. Understand that you know the solution, you just have to wait until they fix it.

  17. The “accuse” problem for Rolf has apparently been fixed in R36; I just spoke to Rolf and Cugel now.

  18. So.. They have fix the quest it seems.. I have just talk to Rolf and accused (accuse) him of the murder and it seems that it worked

  19. I just got this to work. I was able to accuse Rolf, talk to Cugel and deliver the news to Simone and Tanya. Overall, I think the quest is disjointed, but it can now be completed.

  20. As of Dec 31 2016, the tower has two entrances. One open with an arrow on top in a fire & guard Rolf sleeping on 2nd floor and a locked door on the other side. To get to the locked part of the tower, climb on top of the open tower part, jump on the box with the bottle and use the ladder on the OUTSIDE. Then you find the note and (scaringly) the name of the killed children.

  21. Finally went back and finished this quest today. Cudgel gave me 500g for telling him Rolf was the killer, after i “accused” Rolf . After telling the moms the quest cleared from my journal but got zero xp. Guessing that’s because its a ‘simple’ quest at my level and not because questing in this game is still lacking in every regard. I could have killed thugs and made 5X the gold in the time it took to do this quest. Nice to finally complete it but so totally not worth the wait.

  22. Okay because I was playing with my friend we found the missing bit of the puzzle. You HAVE to take the 3 notes with the names on the wall .. and the important bit TAKE the note on the table too! otherwise Rolf refuses to be accused :(.
